Miss Colombia is a better role model than you nasty DL ‘men’ claiming to care about Jamaica

Posted by Zigz On July - 17 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

This is a very entertaining documentary short by good friend Alex about a very colorful Queens, NY resident called Miss Colombia. What I love about Miss Colombia is that ‘she’ could care less what you and I think, as long as ‘she’ is fulfilled  and not hurting anyone, Miss Colombia will be doing the Miss Colombia thing!!

With corporate Jamaica again in a frenzy to cover the shit stains of their Down Low ‘bros’ & ‘uncles’ from being seen by regular folks (who know its there but just dont have the evidence to prove that they are running some raahtid drug and sex rackets), yuh would be heartless to look at Miss Colombia and not admire his resolve to be who Miss Colombia is, as opposed to the money grubbing liars and perverts at the head our country and industry who are using sex and sexuality to whore their ways into money and power.

Read what my girl Alex had to say about her production and check out more from this budding filmmaker at Pretty Girls Carry Guns on youtube (http://youtube.com/prettygirlscarryguns) or on her Vimeo page here.

Thanks Ms Lopez :-)

Alex says:

When I was a sophomore in film school I interviewed a local Jackson Heights celebrity known as “Miss Colombia.” I had often come across Miss Colombia on my way home from school or the movies as a kid. Her inappropriate humor and bold costumes left a permanent impression on me growing up. Kind of like Lady Gaga, in a creepy uncle sort of way. Upon my re-cut of this footage, I am evermore inspired by her vitality and courage.

Terrence Howard Circles Marvin Gaye Role

Posted by Zigz On June - 16 - 2010 1 COMMENT

We posted on Terrence Howard playing Nelson Mandela alongside Jennifer Hudson in Winnie, and now it looks like Howard may star as legendary American singer, Marvin Gaye:

Terrence Howard is reportedly in talks for director Cameron Crowe’s planned biopic of Marvin Gaye for Sony Pictures reports Deadline.

Crowe (“Almost Famous,” “Elizabethtown”) has been developing the film for nearly four years with Will Smith eyed for the lead, but had to go back to the drawing board after he turned down the role.

Crowe has secured rights to Gaye’s music and scored the support of Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr. Scott Rudin will produce.

Howard, meanwhile, says of his involvement: “Nothing’s been signed on paper yet. Everybody who loves music will hate me if I get this one wrong.”

Barrington Levy Calls For Peace in Paradise

Posted by Zigz On June - 15 - 2010 1 COMMENT

“Take away the dark clouds and give us the light, everyone we must unite, because its no longer nice in paradise”

These are the infamous words of a Reggae Legend who has been calling for peace on the island of Jamaica now for decades. The legendary superstar Barrington Levy along with Platinum Camp Productions, Inc. are on the forefront of the struggle to bring attention to the tragic violence that plagues the island nation. Barrington’s consistently uplifting lyrics are a reminder to us all that united we must stand in order to combat negativity and evil that surrounds us in this life.

Barrington, originally from Kingston Jamaica, has been a leader in the reggae industry and has built a reputation on bringing peace to his community and uplifting those around him. The Jamaican Observer reported on Tuesday that “we now live in a society that accepts as normal the blatant disregard for the law and respect for the rights of others – a society in which it is considered good to be bad and bad to be good. It has to stop.”

Barrington Levy is a good role model in times when so many individuals in the entertainment industry are not. His lyrics inspire us to strive to be citizens of our community, proud to be united in our stand for peace. This quote is from Barrington’s new tune “Paradise” off of his new album “It’s About Time” that will be released later this year. Mr. Levy is set to tour this summer to spread a message of peace and unity for all and to promote his new album. Other tracks on the album include collaborations with Damian Marley, Buju Banton, Lil Wayne, and Beres Hammond.

We featured Toi.Gichie here in March, and the song nice for real!!!

Toi Gichie & Konshens are hot and out with a new summer hit single “All Night Party” which was premiered on Zj Liquid’s popular Wednesday afternoon radio show, “Fresh 2 Death” on ZIP 103 FM on Wednesday May 19, 2010. Listeners immediately went to popular social networking website’s Twitter & Facebook to express their excitement about the song.

The Dancehall Reggae sensation Konshens fused with the fresh on the block Toi Gichie is a wonderful fusion of creativity, as their equally unique vocals & styles blend to deliver a single that is guaranteed to rock the airwaves & dancehall. When approached by Alca Traz of Rockwildaz, who is Toi Gichie’s management team to do a remix, Konshens was happy & willing as he felt that what Toi has to offer is new and fresh and she has the potential to do well and cross over onto the international market.

“Music A Give Us The Love” says Konshens, “The Crowd Just A Rock & A Dip So” says Toi on the single which describes the overall vibe delivered. It’s a party / feel good song, raving and partying “From Sun Up to Sun Down” having fun. Produced by UIM Productions, recorded & remix mixed by Sean of Calibur Entertainment, this single is expected to bring a whole new vibe to the dancehall at a time when times are rather challenging and tense.

EVERYTHING “CRIS” IN KINGSTON

Tourism officials working hard to encourage visitors to book Jamaica

NEW YORK (June 11, 2010) – Following my whirlwind visit to Kingston, Jamaica last weekend – the corporate and cultural capital of the Western Caribbean – travelers can rest assured that everything is “cool and cris.”

The recent civil unrest and the government’s security response in the west Kingston neighborhood of Tivoli Gardens caused great concern among travel partners in the marketplace, so I was keen to see the situation firsthand and can verify that Jamaica’s vibes are indeed still nice, and notwithstanding low hotel occupancies, it is business as usual in the capital.

After landing at Norman Manley International Airport on Air Jamaica’s nonstop service from New York’s JFK Airport, Jamaicans were assembling in their hundreds at Hope Gardens, enjoying jerk chicken, pork and seafood creations at the Appleton Estate All Jamaica Grill-Off competition – a telling indication that Jamaicans were feeling comfortable about resuming their social activities since the state’s game-changing crackdown on gunmen and criminality which lasted for a few days.

“Welcome to Jamrock!” was the greeting I received from a local attorney who along with some friends from the tourism and communications fraternities collected me from the Courtleigh Hotel and Suites for a night out on the town. The next few hours were rocking – not the typical site inspection of hotels and resorts that journalists and travel agents must endure; rather, an inspection of Jamaica’s restaurants and night life – from the Fiction Lounge to Christopher’s Jazz Café to the Truck Stop Grill and Bar. After a few hours, it was evident, in spite of plummeting hotel occupancies, “Kingston nah go down for long.”

“People are back out doing what they normally do on a Saturday night,” said Deputy Director of Tourism, David Shields who took the opportunity to socialize with friends as we club-hopped and took in the dancehall vibes of Jamaica. Now in his seventh year with the Jamaica Tourist Board, Shields explained that Jamaica had embarked on a multi-tiered, multi-million dollar marketing, public relations and advertising campaign to communicate to travel partners that the tourism product and experience were not the least affected by the violence in an isolated area of the capital.

While occupancies in Kingston dropped to as low as 30 percent, a bump in bookings was expected in the days ahead as Jamaica gets set to host Caribbean Fashion Week and a major manufacturing exposition.

Bevan Springer, a New York Amsterdam News columnist who writes frequently on travel and tourism issues, is the President of the New Jersey-headquartered Marketplace Excellence Inc. – a full service, integrated marketing agency committed to excellence in the fields of public relations, marketing and media coaching. “Winnie” Director Addresses Criticism from Real Winnie Mandela

Posted by Zigz On June - 12 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

The director of the upcoming Winnie Mandela biopic “Winnie” starring Jennifer Hudson is speaking out against criticism and protests leveled against the project by the real Winnie Mandela.

As previously reported, the ex-wife of South African leader Nelson Mandela has taken issue with the movie, which also features actor Terrence Howard, and is not happy about the way she is portrayed in the script. Her lawyers have referred to the film as a veiled “character assassination.”

However, director Darrell Roodt said he and the film’s producers are forging ahead with the 2 ½ month shoot beginning May 31 in South Africa.

“We don’t shy away from the controversies… [the film is] not for Winnie Mandela, it’s about Winnie Mandela,” said Roodt, according to the Los Angeles Times.

He added: “If it wasn’t for Winnie Mandela, South Africa would have been a vastly different place… it’s the ultimate women’s movie.”

‘Dudus’ may seek political asylum overseas, says The Times Online

Posted by Zigz On May - 29 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

An alleged Jamaican drug baron at the centre of this week’s uprising in Kingston is seeking political asylum abroad, according to a British solicitor who has spoken to him.

Hannah Harris Barrington said she talked to Christopher “Dudus” Coke seven times as loyalists barricaded his stronghold in the Kingston slum of Tivoli Gardens to block his extradition to the US. She said Mr Coke, 42, reputed to be head of the Shower Posse drug gang, feared that security forces wanted to kill him to prevent him talking about his ties to powerful politicians. Tivoli ‘war’ overshadows Kartel/Mavado peace

Posted by Zigz On May - 25 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

THE stand-off between security forces and ‘Dudus’ supporters in Tivoli Gardens, West Kingston, last week overshadowed a significant move towards peace in two other troubled Kingston communities.

Passers-by stood in amazement as residents from Big Yard and Cassava Piece, two long-standing rivals at the centre of a bloody feud, faced off in a busy parking lot off Mannings Hill Road.

Entertainer Mavado (left) converses with Rev Al Miller following the peace talks (Photo: Ingrid Brown)

But instead of trading bullets and harsh words which has been the norm between these warring factions, men, women and children bridged the long-standing divide with firm handshakes, hugs and a friendly smile.

Throngs of residents from both communities walked slowly towards each other, meeting on the imaginable half-way mark in the busy Super Value parking lot to broker the peace deal organised by the Rev Al Miller-led National Transformation Programme (NTP) and the Peace Management Initiative (PMI).

A week prior, members of the NTP and the PMI toured the Cassava Piece community which is aligned to dancehall entertainer, Mavado and Big Yard which has connections to rival deejay, Vybz Kartel. At both communities, residents who had expressed a deep desire to see an end to the constant blood-letting, sealed the deal with hearty handshakes and hugs.

Jennifer, a resident of Big Yard, was emotional as she hugged the young man from Cassava Piece who had threatened her son resulting in him being sent from the area to board elsewhere.

Overwhelmed at what was unfolding before her eyes, Jennifer said she had been praying for this peace for the longest while as the violence between both communities had made it impossible for her to even venture to night services at the nearby church.

“I feel joyous and good,” she said with a big smile.

Not only was she forced to send away her fourth form son, but her six-year-old son and granddaughter had to take the longer route to get to school as they could not pass through Cassava Piece.

“Ah girl was carrying them through there one morning and someone shouted ‘why you bring them through here’,” she told the Observer.

An outward showing of this new peace commitment for both communities will be the staging of a Labour Day clean-up project followed by a peace dance scheduled for today.

They have also pledged to form a joint peace committee to ensure that dialogue continues before a situation escalates. In support, the PMI will establish an empowerment group for the women in both communities.

“You can’t do anything about the past but you can do something about the future,” Rev Miller told the peace meeting, stressing that without peace, prosperity and development could not come to their communities.

Following this persons were given the opportunity to air their grievances in bid to move forward,

“Me heart a bleed right now and me glad we all here to witness what a gwaan because me hear people ah say we fi kill off we one another and that is what them want fi see but it nah go happen,” said one of the players from Big Yard.

Noting that anyone who attempted to break the peace would be removed from the community, he said his side was committed to maintaining the new found unity.

Ivan Shaw, a resident of Cassava Piece and a peace facilitator, said they were committed to controlling the schoolboys and women who play a great role in the beginning of conflicts often started over petty issues.

Deejay Mavado, one of the key persons behind the peace initiative, urged the men to put aside their differences, even as he denied claims that he had been behind the spate of violence.

“Ask them if me ever bring a rifle come give them, but at the same time me nah tell them not to defend themselves,” he said. “We nuh deh here because we fear them or them fear we but is because we want bring back the love,” Mavado told the gathering.

He noted that even if Vybz Kartel, who was absent because of an overseas engagement, did not make it on that day, it should not impact the peace.

“Even if Adi have a show then that nuh have nutten to do with it because me and Adi good,” Mavado said.

NBC Cancels ‘Law & Order’ After 20 Seasons

Posted by Zigz On May - 17 - 2010 1 COMMENT

After 20 years, the original Law & Order will be stop shooting at the end of this month. Reports online are that TNT did not renew the contract to buy rights to the reruns and now, NBC cannot afford to shoot the $2 million an episode show without facing a loss. Law and Order is the 2nd longest running show in US tv history, second only to Gunsmoke.

Not to worry though, because SVU and CI are still on, and there’s a NEW ‘Law and Order: Los Angeles’ coming soon!!

There was hope that despite sagging ratings, “Law & Order” would stick around at least one more year so that it could set a record as the longest-running drama in television history – but that feat was of no concern to NBC.

E! News has confirmed that the network has cancelled the program, and this current 20th season will be its last.

“Law & Order,” which premiered in September of 1990 with stars george Dzundza and Chris Noth, would have passed “Gunsmoke” as the longest running TV drama. Waterston joined the cast in 1994 and gave the show some of its most memorable moments, along with the late Jerry Orbach.

Waterson stars in the current cast, alongside Jeremy Sisto, Anthony Anderson, Linus Roache, Alana De La Garza and S. Epatha Merkerson, who announced last month that this season would be her last after a 17-year run.

The series finale airs May 24, with no official closure, according to E! There have been five spinoff shows from the drama, including the upcoming “Law & Order: Los Angeles,” which NBC has ordered 13 episodes of for the fall.

Two of the spinoffs, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” are currently airing and will continue on.

THE BRUCE GOLDING SAGA: Pastor calls out Jamaican Leader while his wife sits in congregation

Posted by Zigz On May - 16 - 2010 1 COMMENT

OUTSPOKEN Adventist pastor Lorenzo King yesterdaymade the call for Golding to come clean during the weekly Saturday morning service at the Andrews Memorial Seventh-day Adventist Church in Kingston.

Before delving into his sermon, King and the church choir held high placards that read, ‘We want truth’, which was also the theme of his sermon.

The pastor said he was willing to demonstrate along the roadway for the truth and asked for volunteers from the congregation.

But the “full truth” that the nation has been clamouring for since the Manatt affair broke, may never come according to a statement by Mrs Golding, just moments before King’s stirring sermon.

“I must tell you, Bruce is fine,” Mrs Golding told the congregation, while outlining that she has been drawing strength and inspiration from the Bible.

“He is taking some responsibility that he has to take and whatever he says you must read between the lines because he can’t say everything,” added Mrs Golding who appeared frail, an apparent sign of the weight of the crisis that has engulfed her husband.

The furore over the hiring of the US law firm Manatt, Phelps & Phillips to lobby Washington for a favourable outcome in the contentious Christopher ‘Dudus’ Coke extradition matter, and the apparent web of deceit spun by the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), escalated last week Tuesday when the prime minister, after much denial and pressure from the Opposition and other groups, announced in Parliament that he was the one who gave the OK for the engagement of the firm.

Golding, however, maintained that Manatt was hired on behalf of the JLP and not the Government. Manatt is, however, saying otherwise.

Last Tuesday, Golding told the Parliament that the US$49,892.62 used to hire the law firm came from party financiers.

But his admission of his role in the matter, as well as his attempt to separate his responsibilities as JLP leader from those as prime minister triggered a landslide of calls for his resignation.

Those vocalising their displeasure with Golding said he had dealt deceptively with the Jamaican public.

However, his supporters, mostly party members, are maintaining that Golding, with his admission, has dealt forthrightly with the public.

The whole saga has been triggered by a request from the US Government last August for Coke’s extradition. The Golding-led administration has refused to sign the extradition order for Coke, whose stronghold of Tivoli Gardens lies within the prime minister’s West Kingston constituency.

Lil Wayne Gets Busted … in Jail

Posted by Zigz On May - 16 - 2010 2 COMMENTS

Incarcerated rapper, Lil Wayne, was caught Monday with music “contraband.” Officers found headphones, a charger, and a watch that doubles as an MP3 player in Wayne’s cell, hidden inside a potato chip bag. Though it isn’t a real issue, the offense may add a bit more jail time for him, a source told MTV News.

“You just get an infraction, a violation,” the source said. “You lose some ‘good time.’ It depends on the severity of the infraction. Level one is the worst. Then you have [level] two or three. [This infraction] could be a level one. He has to go on trial, and based on evidence, they’ll make their determination.”

Despite the prison’s high level security, Wayne possibly obtained the objects during a visit. MTV’s source says he may have gotten the contraband through another inmate. The source also says Wayne would have to go to trial before a captain or correction officer within 48 hours of the incident, but as of May 13, the source was unaware if that had taken place.

The source also informed reporters that the rapper currently holds a job as a suicide-prevention aide, looking out for suicide risk inmates.

“He checks each cell or area to see if each guy is alive. There are three shifts,” our source said. “I think his shift is at night, like 11 [p.m.] to 7 [a.m.] or 12 to 8.”

Wayne was arrested in 2007 for attempted gun possession in Manhattan at the Beacon Theatre after a performance. Due to stringent New York gun laws, in March he was sentenced to one year in prison.

JUDGE REJECTS BUJU BANTON’S REQUEST

Posted by Zigz On May - 15 - 2010 1 COMMENT

Buju Banton has been denied access to files requested from the state of Florida for his drug possession trial.

The Gargamel and his lawyers were refused access to the civil tax liability documents of the confidential source or the informant.

Prominent attorney at law David Rowe says the judge sided with the prosecution sighting that the trial is not about whether the informant has paid his taxes but whether or not Buju Banton was selling cocaine.

Buju Banton has been in U.S custody since December 10 last year.
Authorities said they videotaped Buju Banton trying to purchase cocaine in a Sarasota warehouse in December.

The incarcerated dancehall deejay is expected to stand trial date on drug possession charges on June 21.

Another Member of the Dancehall Community Shot. Cobra released, Oniel still being treated

Another member of the entertainment fraternity has been shot up.

Producer Rado of Armz House Records was shot several times last night (May 13) in Spanish Town. Irie FM Music News understands that the producer’s car was shot up along St. John’s road. Reports are that he received three shots to the chest before crashing at a gas station in the area. Rado is currently being treated at hospital.

Rado of Armz House Records is the producer of Mavado’s “Gal Ova Gun” on the Double Action rhythm and Twin of Twins “Fren Ting” on the Night Vision rhythm.

Rado is the third member of the entertainment fraternity to be shot up since the start of the week. On Monday Oniel of dancehall group Voicemail was shot several times and is currently in hospital while on Tuesday dancehall deejay Cobra was shot in the chest and arm. He has since been treated and released

The recent upsurge of violent attack on the entertainers have prompted members of the industry to organized a Peace March scheduled for Sunday, May 23. The march, which is called ‘Walk For Peace’ is set to start at the Police Officers’ Club in New Kingston and end at Heroes Circle, in downtown Kingston.

So yesterday I went through my I Tunes and this song was played the longest ago out of all of the music in my library; meaning  that I’ve listened to all other songs on my laptop since 2/3/08 10:11 am except this, until now!! I wanted to konk myself!! This song is hottt!!!

It instantly made me think of my Mother because she always says that one thing my generation lacks is social leaders. Mama Earth thinks that musicians and artists can be good role models but when they are the ONLY role models it creates problems since their artistic persona is not necessarily who they are in real life.

I’ve had this conversation with many of my friends over the past few months (maybe even year) and guys I love you, but yuh talking utter F*CKRY when you try to tell mi that the music is not influencing the life that we live in Jamaica. If anything, its desensitizing us into taking it for granted that we are killing thousands of people a year. Yes I said WE!

It’s hard to turn from an artists based on the choices they make in their personal life but for the LIFE of me, I cannot accept discrimination against one group of people or ideal when in real life that is your lifestyle or mindset.
