“Take away the dark clouds and give us the light, everyone we must unite, because its no longer nice in paradise”
These are the infamous words of a Reggae Legend who has been calling for peace on the island of Jamaica now for decades. The legendary superstar Barrington Levy along with Platinum Camp Productions, Inc. are on the forefront of the struggle to bring attention to the tragic violence that plagues the island nation. Barrington’s consistently uplifting lyrics are a reminder to us all that united we must stand in order to combat negativity and evil that surrounds us in this life.

Barrington, originally from Kingston Jamaica, has been a leader in the reggae industry and has built a reputation on bringing peace to his community and uplifting those around him. The Jamaican Observer reported on Tuesday that “we now live in a society that accepts as normal the blatant disregard for the law and respect for the rights of others – a society in which it is considered good to be bad and bad to be good. It has to stop.”
Barrington Levy is a good role model in times when so many individuals in the entertainment industry are not. His lyrics inspire us to strive to be citizens of our community, proud to be united in our stand for peace. This quote is from Barrington’s new tune “Paradise” off of his new album “It’s About Time” that will be released later this year. Mr. Levy is set to tour this summer to spread a message of peace and unity for all and to promote his new album. Other tracks on the album include collaborations with Damian Marley, Buju Banton, Lil Wayne, and Beres Hammond.

Damian ‘Jr Gong’ Marley has usurped deejays Matisyahu and Vybz Kartel to become third most popular deejay online, following the May release of his charting album.
Marley’s search volume has been steadily climbing since 2010 which allowed him to beat Kartel in April and Matisyahu in May, according to data from US-based search engine Google analysed by the Observer. It indicates that more persons world-wide are searching for news and music from Marley–the son of reggae legend Bob Marley.
He was expected to receive a boost in Internet searches following his album release; in fact during the week of its release Marley actually beat Shaggy for a short time. Marley however still towers over Matisyahu so far, but may fade as his album ages. Last week, Distant Relatives, the joint album by rapper Nas and Marley out-charted the Rolling Stones to debut at five on the Billboard 200 album chart whilst also topping the Hip Hop and Reggae album charts.
During May, every 100 searches for Damian Marley saw a corresponding 54 searches for Matisyahu and 30 searches for Kartel; Marley however is far below the search activity of Sean Paul and Shaggy at 208 and 114 respectively. Contextually, trend data over a 12 month period shows that Kartel and Marley are statistically tied with Matisyahu receiving 50 per cent more hits than either artiste.
Google Trends analyses a portion of Google web searches to compute the quantity of searches for terms relative to the total number of searches done on Google over time. Online search volume has significance as it reflects, in part, the fluctuations in online popularity of an artiste. The most popular Jamaican entertainers have the most online traffic — these are Bob Marley, Sean Paul and Shaggy.
Over time online traffic can gauge the popularity of artistes. For instance, Mavado in 2008 was more searched for than rival deejay Vybz Kartel, reflecting the rise of the Gully God. Since 2009, however, Kartel has usurped Mavado, reflecting a barrage of singles, strong performances and a slew of controversial publicity stunts.
An artiste’s online traffic usually jumps leading up to an album launch but also is affected by the release of news. Artiste Buju Banton online presence spiked following his December 10 arrest in Florida, which also led him to re-chart on Billboard’s Reggae Albums. Banton became the second most searched for Jamaican artiste, following Bob Marley, but prior to his arrest, Banton was less searched for than many of his peers. His trend data from Google had risen so fast that between December 13 to 18 he was twice as popular as Shaggy, four times more popular than Vybz Kartel and six times more popular than Sizzla and Mavado. By New Year’s Eve, Banton’s presence had waned.
Banton, born Mark Myrie, along with Ian Thomas, also called ‘Yush’ and Jason Mack, was held December 10 by Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents and charged with conspiracy and intent to distribute at least five kilogrammes of cocaine.
Here is the long awaited video for the song “Sunshine girl” from the Dubtonic Kru

“I’m just trying to stay focused and put in the work and tackle not only Europe and parts of the USA but also locally and I’m bringing it this year, so people can look out,” said Sophia.
A tonic is generally regarded as a brew taken for the improvement of one’s health. While acknowledging this, the popular online encyclopedia, Wikipedia, also offers a musical definition of the word tonic. It states, “tonic is the first note of a musical composition” and further notes — “In western European tonal music of the 18th and 19th centuries, the tonic centre was the most important of all the different tone centres which a composer used in a piece of music, with most pieces beginning and ending on the tonic,…..”
So the question that readily comes to mind therefore, just what was the thinking behind the conception of the Jamaican musical aggregation called Dubtonic Kru?

“Well, Dub, that came about because of how we play the music which is the foundation…So dub being the foundation, a lot of rub-a-dub, hardcore rough-edge, roots music. Then tonic — we always wanted to make sure that we are representing a medicinal musical brand. It’s more a situation if you listen, the lyrics they should be edifying and the music should allow you to move and put you into a positive vibes,” explains Beleon White
Continuing the definition of his five-man musical outfit, the dreadlocks drummer/vocalist better known as Jubba, philosophises “…Right now the focus is just music and people. Bringing people together through music with a positive influence. Music that makes you dance and music that gives you some real vibration to think about. Music to educate and entertain.”
The full complement of the approximately 15-year-old Dubtonic Kru are vocalist/bassist Strickland Stone, vocalist/guitarist Omar “Lanzo” Johnson, Horace “Kamau” Morgan (percussionist/vocalist), and keyboardist/vocalist Luke Dixon.
“We are at a stage right now where we are in a state of emergency. The state of emergency is really a world crisis where people need vibes and words to comfort them. To edify them. It’s all about love and unity and the upliftment of mankind. Not just one race, but all races,” Jubba told the Observer
“We see ourselves as world citizens,” he goes on, “and being apart of different cultures ….But music is music and we use it and our talent in the best way possible. And as a result of travelling throughout Europe for a number of years and seeing what people gravitate to, we realise that it’s about music and diverse kind of music but moreso, what was important to us was to bring our culture through that vibration….and set some trends with positive music…”
Luke was once Tony Rebel’s session/sideman, and Jubba along with Stone have recorded with Burning Spear, Mighty Diamonds, Daddy U Roy, and with the exception of Burning Spear, toured with them as well. They have also toured with Max Romeo, Ethiopians, Congos, and composed albums for Bushman, Junior Kelly, Chuck Fender, Richie Spice, along list of artistes mainly cultural.
Dubtonic Kru has composed music for Champaigne Records for groups such as Voicemail’s Ready To Party, D’Angel’s Downtown Girl Living Uptown Life, and recorded with just about everybody.
Their most recent self-titled album was released in December 2009. Their first, Jungle Fever was released in 2007. A compilation of both albums featuring the favourites on each has just been completed. Just finished editing also is a video for it (the compilation set) which should be released in two weeks called Sunshine Girl.
Having recently ended a tour of the US with Mykal Roze, Dubtonic Kru’s focus now is on the annual trip to Europe for the summer festivals. “We have included the US this year in our roster because there is now a demand since the tour with Mykal Roze, as we have expanded the boundaries as we are going across the boarders,” revealed Kamau.
In 2005, a descision was made to become a show band — doing less jobs as a backing band.
One of our major concerts is Bands Incorporated. The first one was in May of last year. And then we had a second one in December. We have not gotten around organising one for this year yet, but we are still thinking about it,” kamau said.
“The response has been great,” he enthused, “People enjoyed the shows. Appearing on the shows were groups like Rootz Underground. The first one was like a collaborated effort with us and them together and then they appeared again a second time. And we hope to continue that relationship with them going forward. C-Sharp was on the first edition as well. The second edition saw groups like Raging Fire, Mystical Revolution Band, and the Uprising Band.”
SubKonshus Music says:
“Brand new ‘old skool’ from Konshens, gal dem a talk pon di trailer load riddim, unu memba shabba…trailer load a gal….big up unu self and check out di ting..download link…clean and raw version”
It almost seems like a gross understatement to say, ‘Reggae/Dancehall artiste Chino has been hard at work’. This is so because the singjay has released more than seven impressive songs over the past few weeks and has no intention of slowing down.
Among Chino’s new releases which have already started to heat up radio-land, are Before Dem Gone produced by Stephen “Di Genius” McGregor on the Big Ship label; No Gyal on the Catalogue Riddim also produced by Di Genius on the Big Ship label; Sound Execution on the Stagalag Riddim, produced by Shane Brown on the Jukeboxx label;Gyalist Fi Real on the Ward 21 label; Haffi Get A Girl on the Premium Riddim on Demarco’s Starkutt Records; Money Round also featuring Di Genius and Ricky Blaze on ZJ Chrome’s CR203 Mad Collab Riddim. In addition to that, another recent single, Badmind, which was also released for sale on iTunes has been receiving steady sales. The single, which is a part of the compilation Di Genius, called Labwork Vol. 2. The single will also be released on Chino’s Never Change slated for release in the Japanese market in July.

Regarding his continuously growing catalogue of songs, Chino, whose correct name is Daniel McGregor says, “Music is something that I love but it’s also a craft that I respect. I always try to look at my surroundings and give my own spin on it, whether it’s a party setting that would inspire a song like Money Round or a song like Before Dem Gone which was as a result of everything going on in the country now. Basically once I observe something and get a vibe, I get in the studio and sing what I think and feel.”
Additionally, Chino will be working his way across the island this weekend at a number of shows which include, Islingston High School’s Barbeque tonight (Friday); the highly anticipated Western Consciousness concert tomorrow night followed by a performance in St. Elizabeth on Sunday night.

Another member of the entertainment fraternity has been shot up.
Producer Rado of Armz House Records was shot several times last night (May 13) in Spanish Town. Irie FM Music News understands that the producer’s car was shot up along St. John’s road. Reports are that he received three shots to the chest before crashing at a gas station in the area. Rado is currently being treated at hospital.
Rado of Armz House Records is the producer of Mavado’s “Gal Ova Gun” on the Double Action rhythm and Twin of Twins “Fren Ting” on the Night Vision rhythm.
Rado is the third member of the entertainment fraternity to be shot up since the start of the week. On Monday Oniel of dancehall group Voicemail was shot several times and is currently in hospital while on Tuesday dancehall deejay Cobra was shot in the chest and arm. He has since been treated and released
The recent upsurge of violent attack on the entertainers have prompted members of the industry to organized a Peace March scheduled for Sunday, May 23. The march, which is called ‘Walk For Peace’ is set to start at the Police Officers’ Club in New Kingston and end at Heroes Circle, in downtown Kingston.

So yesterday I went through my I Tunes and this song was played the longest ago out of all of the music in my library; meaning that I’ve listened to all other songs on my laptop since 2/3/08 10:11 am except this, until now!! I wanted to konk myself!! This song is hottt!!!
It instantly made me think of my Mother because she always says that one thing my generation lacks is social leaders. Mama Earth thinks that musicians and artists can be good role models but when they are the ONLY role models it creates problems since their artistic persona is not necessarily who they are in real life.
I’ve had this conversation with many of my friends over the past few months (maybe even year) and guys I love you, but yuh talking utter F*CKRY when you try to tell mi that the music is not influencing the life that we live in Jamaica. If anything, its desensitizing us into taking it for granted that we are killing thousands of people a year. Yes I said WE!
It’s hard to turn from an artists based on the choices they make in their personal life but for the LIFE of me, I cannot accept discrimination against one group of people or ideal when in real life that is your lifestyle or mindset.
There’s a difference between teaching, reflecting and glorifying.
This is how legends should be passing on; living long lives and of natural causes!!! Thank You Mr Bucknor for what you have done for our music Read the rest of this entry »
