VYBZ KARTEL AND MAVADO Say “No More War”
As a matter of National emergency, Gaza/Gully peace has been declared.
Early Monday morning ushered in a historic moment for dancehall music. In the dawn after-hours of Sunday’s West Kingston Jamboree, Mavado and Vybz Kartel shared the stage after a couple years of lyrical feud that never seemed to call a constant or unbiased winner. Both men have been the two biggest names in Jamaican dancehall for the past 4 or 5 years- with prolific music catalogs to back it up- and so it follows that they are both blamed for a division that has been slowly inching away at the balance of everyday life across Jamaica.
No doubt in my mind that Kartel and Mavado decided to do this because of the pressure that didn’t seem to be letting up coming from schools, to government, to church. Everything was blamed on this lyrical beef, but what else did we expect when dancehall (like Rasta) is still generally outcast in official Jamaican society? While you have some idiot fans that take the music to extreme levels, the beef was only healthy for the music to enter the next phase.

MESSAGE!!!! (Hint Hint Vado and Vybz)
There can only be one BEST. There can only be one KING of DANCEHALL (fuk Beenie right now, he’s king of performing) and these two battled it out to the top where the Ministry of this and the Committee of that (and of course Ian Boyne) want to say their part. How many other dancehall artists can say that they were ever thought to be so important to the running of our country? (Hint Hint Vado and Vybz)
I present this stage sharing ans subsequent meeting with the gov officials as historical because never before has dancehall taken so much importance in the culture and society of Jamaica that artists have to put their ‘making up’ on blatant public display with a plan set up by the government. The government has basically stepped in with a sort of rehabilitation or community service program for the two artists and their fans.
Dancehall has always been the unruly and outspoken child of reggae and the bigger heads have mostly turned a blind eye towards it in terms of sponsoring and wanting to develop the culture. How much did they do after the last arranged meeting between the two and now?
Hopefully it bring Kartel to the lyrical levels he was at when he was “up to the time”-You know it’s Kartel an a him did start well” (when throwback jersey’s were in style) since he wont always be preeing battling the only other artist who is close to his popularity. Mavado needs to make those raahtid albums and give the hip hop world something to spin from first track to the last and then repeat.

*Sidenote- isnt it kind of ominous that ‘Prezzi’- the same man the US is looking to extradite- is the one who facilitated this link up in Tivoli Gardens.
